Toronto up-and-comer LOONY is a singer-songwriter from Scarborough, who has been singing before she could speak and writing songs since a young child. Grown up on neo-soul, hip-hop and R&B, LOONY describes her sound as “alternative R&B” as she strives to synthesize her love for the genre’s new-wave and old-school elements in her music. At 18 she started assembling various bands to play her music and was performing in Toronto and Montreal, playing gigs at the Velvet Underground, Taste of Lawrence, Montreal’s L’Astral, Tattoo (opening for Phife Dawg), The Painted Lady, Montreal’s Nuit Blanche, and this year has played The Gladstone and Big On Bloor. LOONY released a 4-song mixtape in late 2016 upon graduating University, ultimately chronicling a day in the life of the born and raised east-end resident. The mini-tape was treated as being an ode to her vices, personal relationships, insecurities, and the woes of public transportation - reflecting a genuine portrait of her environment and experiences.
“I write from the heart, and try to be as vulnerable as I can in my music. I’d definitely describe myself as ‘anti-cool’” she laughs. “For me it’s about being honest, and humbly creating something new from all the musical influences I’ve been raised on, that have enabled me to now tell my own story.”
LOONY’s first single + music video will be premiering March 2018, while her first official EP is due to release later this year.
